Urban Biophilia is a scientific project funded by the Turku Urban Research Programme 2026-2027 and conducted at the University of Turku. Our work explores how Finnish people experience and perceive urban carnivores such as red foxes, European badgers, and raccoon dogs, as well as human attitudes towards urban green spaces, forests, and larger carnivores (grey wolf, brown bear, wolverine and Eurasian lynx). We also study how carnivore behaviour changes along the rural–urban gradient, using camera traps and objects placed in private gardens and forests. Our project also host puppet show workshops, bringing science and art together to promote coexistence with wildlife. By being a multidisciplinary project, our research strengthens links between the University, the city, and cultural actors in Turku.
